THE SHADOW OF YOUR SMILE (also a perfect companion or sequel to THE ASTRUD GILBERTO ALBUM) is a heavenly listening experience from the first note to the last, brimming with innocence and sadness and beauty. Particularly fascinating is the unity which the record manages to achieve -- it compiles material recorded over the course of 16 months (as noted above); the chart duties are doled out to three different arrangers, and the songs mix together then-current American songs with a few by Brazilian masters Luiz Bonfa and Carlos Lyra. Somehow, it all fits together into one coherent whole, with each opposing influence synergetically complementing the rest.

Dick was born in Rio de Janeiro on January, 14, 1921. Dick Farney was an excellent singer, instrumentist and composer who contributed decisively to the renovation of the brazilian popular music by incorporating jazz harmonies and style.

Singer Lucio Alves was one of the great stars of the pre-bossa nova "radio singers" era, a crooner and balladeer who moved from the old-fashioned samba-cancao sound of the 1930s into a more cool, modern vocal style, influenced by Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and other American pop singers. Along with Dick Farney, Alves was the idol of many younger Brazilians, including artists such as Joao Gilberto, who emulated his cool approach and incorporated it into the new bossa nova style of the late '50s. Although eclipsed by his followers, Alves recorded well into the 1970s, and worked with some of the bossa pioneers...

The most essential albums recorded by João Gilberto are his first three, Chega de Saudade (1959), O Amor, O Sorriso e a Flor (1960), and "João Gilberto" (1961). All three remain extremely up-to-date and share in common a superb standard of quality in compositions, arrangements (mostly designed by Tom Jobim), and Gilberto's performances at the guitar and voice.

Two years later, Cardoso was invited to be a singer on an album of songs written by himself and Jobim. Canção do Amor Demais became the first album of bossa nova launching the new genre.

The legendary Ol' Blue Eyes sings the Bossa Nova icon's compositions and does more than justice to his songs. His interpretations are awesomely beautiful and incredibly enchanting. He covers these songs with utmost confidence considering that these songs are not his normal repertoire. In my opinion, this is one of Sinatra's finest albums ever recorded. With A.C. Jobim and one of my favorite conductors/arrangers, Claus Ogerman in the picture, what more can you ask for?

This disc is an example. It has Brazil inside and was recorded by one of the best singers ever known. Definitely, it could not be out of our collection. It has only Brazilian musicians, including a special participation of Maestro Antonio Carlos Jobim. Let's see.

Granted, Ella's voice was a mere shadow of her glory years, but her control of her lower register was impeccable. Of course, her scatting, especially on "The Boy from Impanema," was hard hitting.

Tarde em Itapoa (Toquinho e Vinicius) - Lyrics
Um velho calção de banho
O dia pra vadiar
Um mar que não tem tamanho
Um arco íris no ar
Depois na praça Caymmi
Sentir preguiça no corpo
E numa esteira de vime
Beber uma água de côco

É bom passar uma tarde em Itapoã
Ao sol que arde em Itapoã
Ouvir o mar de Itapoã
Falar de amor em Itapoã
Passar uma tarde em Itapoã
Ao sol que arde em Itapoã
Ouvir o mar de Itapoã
Falar de amor em Itapoã

Enquanto o mar inaugura
Um verde novinho em folha
Argumentar com doçura
Com uma cachaça de rolha
E com o olhar esquecido
No encontro do céu e mar
Bem devagar e sentindo
A terra toda rodar

É bom passar uma tarde em Itapoã
Ao sol que arde em Itapoã
Ouvir o mar de Itapoã
Falar de amor em Itapoã
Passar uma tarde em Itapoã
Ao sol que arde em Itapoã
Ouvir o mar de Itapoã
Falar de amor em Itapoã

Depois sentir o arrepio
Do vento que a noite traz
E o diz-que diz-que macio
Que brota nos coqueirais
E nos espaços serenos
Sem ontem nem amanhã
Dormir nos braços morenos
Da lua de Itapoã

É bom passar uma tarde em Itapoã
Ao sol que arde em Itapoã
Ouvir o mar de Itapoã
Falar de amor em Itapoã
Passar uma tarde em Itapoã
Ao sol que arde em Itapoã
Ouvir o mar de Itapoã
Falar de amor em Itapoã
Passar uma tarde em Itapoã
Ao sol que arde em Itapoã
Ouvir o mar de Itapoã
Falar de amor em Itapoã
Passar uma tarde em Itapoã
Ao sol que arde em Itapoã
Ouvir o mar de Itapoã
Falar de amor em Itapoã
