"It's going to be a good year," so says lead singer, Hamilton Leithauser, and is in essence an exclamation from The Walkmen on "In The New Year" from their latest release. "You & Me," their stellar fourth effort is the most cohesive and impressive release they have attempted yet. This is without a doubt the best collection of songs from this band since their beginning on "Everyone Who Pretended To Like Me Is Gone." This has been the album I have been waiting for The Walkmen to produce.

This is some of the most sparse and lush music that I have perhaps ever heard. There are some booty shakin' IDM beats and some shoegazerish guitars. There are some groovy bass lines and then some atmospheric bliss. Atlas Sound is a bit like Flying Saucer Attack, Stereolab, and Animal Collective- in ways.

Hailing from Baltimore, Beach House's second album "Devotion" is more like sleeping in a haunted, jewelled music box -- all ghostly singing, lushly sparkling pop instrumentation and sensually dreamy melodies.

Refined and polished, Nocturne is a carefully constructed patchwork of hazy synths, power-pop rhythms, and glistening guitar work.

‘Long Slow Dance,’ the Fresh & Onlys’ fourth album in as many years. This thing’s a breakthrough; the band is joyous, confident--almost dangerous. ‘L.S.D.’ teems with Morricone-esque flourishes and seemingly disparate genre elements. Recorded on the same reel-to-reel that Warren Zevon did “Werewolves of London,” these instantly compelling songs demand multiple listens. It’s both the San Francisco act’s most cohesive work to date and a sprawling selection of stoner-anthems.

THE DANSE SOCIETY are without doubt one of the undiscovered gems of the 80's. This album has very gothic leanings with its jangly guitar and minor key arrangements. Perhaps the best thing about it is Lyndon Scarfe's distinctive keyboard sound which shines here more than on their earlier releases. The production is also a quantum leap forward from their independant releases which contributes even more to the density and menace of the songs.

Tones On Tail was a project created by Daniel Ash in 1982 so that he could experiment with music that just wouldn't have worked well with his other band, Bauhaus. Either by accident or design, Bauhaus had crafted and developed a particular forte, and the stuff that Ash wrote for Tones just wouldn't have worked in the confining Bauhaus setting.

Awash in balmy, neon grooves and exultant, kaleidoscopic scraps of melody, the Tough Alliance's U.S. album debut and second proper pop full-length is neither a dramatic change of direction nor an astounding leap forward from the already quite excellent The New School -- but it is a revelation nevertheless.

"Andorra" is a pretty big departure from Caribou's past work -- he started with jazzy electronica, then dense electro-guitarpop and then the free-form psychedelic dementafolk of "The Milk of Human Kindness." This one sounds more like a 1966 acid trip in a summery meadow -- it's just pure, magical psychedelica, with moments of indie-rock and krautrock thrown in.

Sally Shapiro's "Disco Romance" album is a lilting and introspective piece of work - which sounds like an odd way to describe a disco album, but it somehow manages to maintain a glacial calm and a hint of sadness in every single track, even when the BPM's are pretty fast and the drum machine is churning out robotic beats for all it's worth. Essentially a project by Swedish musician Johan Agebjorn, it's unlikely that the artist "Sally Shapiro" herself is the driving force behind it, especially as there have been no personal appearances or live performances by her to promote the album.
