Ask anyone to name their favourite music songwriters who hail from Ireland and you will probably get quite a few blank looks followed by answers such as Bono, Van Morrison or Shane McGowan. In fact, you will probably hear The Corrs before anyone mentions Coughlan or O'Hagan. But, these two chaps produced some of the greatest pop songs of the eighties when they were in a band called Microdisney

About twenty years ago--yes, kids, back in the vinyl days--I found "Kilimanjaro" in the record store cut-out bin. I bought it on a whim, knowing nothing of its personnel or genesis, and I was rewarded with an album that prodded me into exploring whole other genres of music.

I Kill Kane is a indie rock lo-fi band formed in 2008 by sisters Qué (drums) and Rety (vocals, guitar) and his best friend Rafael (guitar). With the finest compositions that have made so far, they expose the most raw and honest sounds, without people's influences from outside the consolidated trio.

Moving to the Creation label, Felt — by this time a stable quartet including keyboardist Martin Duffy and stalwart drummer Gary Ainge — was enormously productive in 1986, beginning with Ballad of the Band. The nearly unlabeled 12-inch — two light-sounding Dylanish songs and two piano pieces — was produced by another Cocteau Twin, Robin Guthrie, and contains the instrumental "Ferdinand Magellan," Lawrence's second tribute to great explorers. ("Vasco de Gama" was on Strange Idols Pattern.)

How can I ever forget you
You don't know just what I've been through
The holiday we spent together
Lives with me now and forever

I tried but I can't find you
Tell me now what do I do
I tried but I can't find you
Tell me now what do I do

I can't find my piece of mind
Because I need you with me all of the time
I used to think about you night and day
I used to feel what language cannot say
Oh I can't find you
No I can't find my piece of mind without you

Maybe you'd write me a letter
And tell me why I never met you
Our rendezvous just ended in sorrow
Without you there's no tomorrow

I tried but I can't find you
Tell me now what do I do
I tried but I can't find you
Tell me now what do I do

I can't find my piece of mind
Because I need you with me all of the time
I used to think about you night and day
I didn't care what other people would say
Oh I can't find you
No I can't find my piece of mind without you

I can't find my piece of mind
Because I need you with me all of the time
I used to think about you night and day
I used to feel what language cannot say
Oh I can't find you
No I can't find my piece of mind without you

One of my favourite The Smiths songs "That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore" a single from their 1985 album "Meat Is Murder".

the writer

Park the car at the side of the road
You should know
Time's tide will smother you
And I will too
When you laugh about people who feel so
Very lonely
Their only desire is to die
Well, I'm afraid
It doesn't make me smile
I wish I could laugh

But that joke isn't funny anymore
It's too close to home
And it's too near the bone
It's too close to home
And it's too near the bone
More than you'll ever know ...

Kick them when they fall down
Kick them when they fall down
You kick them when they fall down
Kick them when they fall down
You kick them when they fall down
Kick them when they fall down
You kick them when they fall down
Kick them when they fall down

It was dark as I drove the point home
And on cold leather seats
Well, it suddenly struck me
I just might die with a smile on my
Face after all

I've seen this happen in other people's
Lives
And now it's happening in mine

Davy was born in Dublin in 1959 and was brought up to speak Irish as his first language. At the age of 12 he fell under the spell of the uilleann pipes. However, due to expense, his father refused to buy them for him. This led him to ask his Godfather for the money who obliged with the condition that he practise exceedingly.
