I, literally, wore this album out in '81 during my freshman year at art school (records were made out of vinyl then). It was a favorite then and has stood the test of time--toe-tapping from the first track to the last, great lyrics and music. The original is an excellent record--a true classic. So I was very excited to see this reissue (now I could give my second time worn vinyl record a rest).

A collaborative project between the British multi-instrumentalist and composer, Mark Tranmer (gnac, The Montgolfier Brothers) and the Italian virtuoso pianist, Alessandra Celletti, the red pages was recorded live in the studio in Rome. Tranmer and Celletti met via myspace in late 2007 after hearing each other’s work. The 25-track album on cd 1 comprises eight main themes and variations. The album is predominantly piano-based – played by Celletti, with sporadic sprinklings of stratocaster by Tranmer. The main themes were written by Tranmer, and the variations by Tranmer and Celletti. Musically, the closest points of reference are the piano-based classical and soundtrack works of Michael Nyman, Phillip Glass, Wim Mertens, Sylvain Chauveau, and Ennio Morricone, as well as the piano-based work of post-rock collective Rachel’s.

This is a truly wonderful gem by some of the former musicians from the seminal 80's SKA band "The Specials". I used to have it on vinyl, wore it out, and now I'm buying the CD. The highlights on the album have to be "Free Nelson Mandela", written while he was still jailed in SA - exhuberant, and although in a SKA guise, with the same emotional context as South African township music - protest music that will move your feet and your heart and will run continually in your head when it's not on your headphones. The rest of the album is haunting. "Racist Friend" and "Alcohol" in particular are great songs. If "More Specials" the second Specials album made any impression on you, then this is worth sitting on your CD shelf alongside it.

Here's one of my old bands, glow, circa 1991-1992. A special thanks to Kelly Bloomer, who filmed and edited this. Former band members: Jason Deming, Kyle Morrison, Steve Ginsburg, and Stephanie Winter for her guest appearance........................The songs were engineered by Jason Tesch. One was single released on Susstones Records, "Tomorrow's Just A Ghost"/"What Is Really You".

The Specials "Do Nothing" from their 1980 album "More Specials". Brilliant stuff.

I walk along this lonely street
Trying to find, find a future
New pair of shoes are on my feet
Cause fashion is my only culture
Nothing ever change (x2)

People say to me just be yourself
It makes no sense to fallow fashion
How could I be anybody else
I don't try I've got no reasons
Nothing ever change (x2)

I'm just living in a life without meaning
I walk and walk - do nothing
I'm just living in a life without feeling
I talk and talk - say nothing

I walk along this same old lonely street
Still trying to find, find a reason
Policeman comes and smacks me in the teeth
I don't complain it's not my function
Nothing ever change (x2)

They're just living in a life without meaning
I walk and walk - do nothing
They´re just playing a life without thinking
They talk and talk - say nothing

 I'm just living in a life without meaning
I walk and walk I'm dreaming

Bob Marley "Waiting In Vain" from his 1977 album "Exodus" and my favourite Bob song.

no brasil

I don't wanna wait in vain for your love;
I don't wanna wait in vain for your love.
From the very first time I rest my eyes on you, girl,
My heart says follow t'rough.
But I know, now, that I'm way down on your line,
But the waitin' feel is fine:
So don't treat me like a puppet on a string,
'Cause I know I have to do my thing.
Don't talk to me as if you think I'm dumb;
I wanna know when you're gonna come - soon.
I don't wanna wait in vain for your love;
I don't wanna wait in vain for your love;
I don't wanna wait in vain for your love,
'Cause if summer is here,
I'm still waiting there;
Winter is here,
And I'm still waiting there.

Like I said:
It's been three years since I'm knockin' on your door,
And I still can knock some more:
Ooh girl, ooh girl, is it feasible?
I wanna know now, for I to knock some more.
Ya see, in life I know there's lots of grief,
But your love is my relief:
Tears in my eyes burn - tears in my eyes burn
While I'm waiting - while I'm waiting for my turn,
See!
