Following the relative success of Mirage, Camel decided to embark on that staple of prog rock, the concept album. When they were finished, they produced an instrumental one that holds together quite well. The Snow Goose (technically, the title is legally Music Inspired By The Snow Goose) is a beautiful work of prog grandeur, one that lovers of melodic prog should enjoy. Download.

A Man and a Woman (French: Un homme et une femme) is a 1966 French film. The movie was written by Claude Lelouch and Pierre Uytterhoeven, and directed by Lelouch. It is notable for its lush photography (Lelouch had a background in advertising photography), which features frequent segues between full color, black-and-white, and sepia-toned shots, and for its memorable musical score by Francis Lai. The Aerovons were formed in 1966 in St Louis, Missouri by Tom Hartman. A 1967 demo record was heard by a representative of Capitol Records. In spite of an offer to record in Los Angeles, the group held out hope that they could record in London, the recording home of their heroes, The Beatles. In 1968 they travelled to London twice, receiving offers from both EMI and Decca. In 1969, the band returned to London and recorded an album at Abbey Road studio. Guitarist Bob Frank, a long time member of the group, left the group just before they went to London to record, due to personal issues. Despite blogs and rumors to the contrary, Bob was never "let go" and was always missed, according to leader Tom Hartman. Only once in England did the band realized that his replacement, Phil Edholm, and the group had differences that proved insurmountable. He left shortly after they began recording.

Once the album was finished, the band returned to St. Louis where more personal problems between a group member and his family caused the group to splinter. EMI decided not to release the album. EMI invited Tom Hartman to come to England and reload, so to speak, but Hartman felt moving to England was too great a step at his age, and the partnership with EMI was dissolved. The album was not released until a CD release in 2003 by RPM. Download.

Shepp, who is also a playwright, brings an immense sense of dramatic gesture to jazz. There is no finer statement of the blues rhetoric than "Backwater Blues" on this CD, and no saxophone notes were ever more dignified, carved out of rock than those on 'St James Infirmary.' The soprano playing (more or less every other track) is also powerful and individual. Horace Parlan (piano) is a marvel of elegant, dignified rhythmic balance, on this as on "Goin' Home," making these two wonderful additions to the jazz duet library. It is great to see these titles on www.Amazon.com, where their absence for several years really made one wonder. Download.

Biff Bang Pow! were an indie pop band from London, England, active between 1983 and 1991, centering around Creation Records boss Alan McGee. Glaswegian Alan McGee had previously been in the band Laughing Apple, who released 3 singles in 1981/82. After moving to London, McGee formed a new band, Biff Bang Pow!, taking their name from a song by one of his favourite bands, The Creation. The first release on Creation records, "'73 in '83" by The Legend! came with a flexi-disc featuring Laughing Apple's "Wouldn't You", a song that would later appear on the first Biff Bang Pow! album. The music made by Afterglow shifted wildly between Jefferson Airplane/Donovan-influenced folk-rock and eerie sounds that could only have been created after months spent as captives inside a UFO headed for deep space. Vocalists/guitarists Tony Tecumseh and Gene Resler, keyboard man Roger Swanson, bassist Ron George and drummer Larry Alexander—all hailing from the Twin Peaks-like Siskiyou outback near Yreka, Calif.—had the good sense to return to college and get productive jobs once Afterglow folded. But the band left behind an exhilarating vapor-trail of music, cut at Leo Kulka's Golden State Recorders in San Francisco, that still beguiles both fans of psych-rock and “something else” rock to this day. When Roger Quigley played drums in a small indie band from Manchester, he seemed not to have another ambition in life than to support The Fall, which is why he used to walk past Mark E Smith’s house again and again. Nevertheless, some years later, he embarked on what looked like the darkest of solo careers. Perhaps he would be placed next to those myths from Manchester - or perhaps he would have to settle for their leftover crumbs. Today, Roger Quigley is undoubtedly one of the biggest talents in the English music scene. After more than a decade of work, his albums as Quigley, AT SWIM TWO BIRDS and The Montgolfier Brothers always ooze poetry and emotion. Download
