“You Must Believe in Spring” is an indispensable part of the huge recorded output of Bill Evans, for musical reasons, but its significance is otherwise noteworthy as well. It was his first date for Warner Brothers, after a long and fruitful association with Fantasy Records. Recorded in August 1977 at Capitol studios in Los Angeles, but not released until early 1981 -- it was also the first album released by any company after the pianist’s death in September 1980, thus adding to the bittersweet experience of listening to its beauty, for those of us who first picked it up on vinyl back then. It still holds up as one of the most "billevans-ish" albums there are, to coin a phrase: so many of the unique qualities ascribed to his playing over the years can be found right here in this recording.

It isn't the same as the GLO stuff. There's something different about it. The whole album has a very ethereal, haunting presence that draws you right in and keeps you interested, such is the variety of the tracks on offer here. It all kicks off very sturdily with 'Astral Phase', snappy drums and jazzy notes, then retains this flavour for the next 2 tracks, then drops right down to maximum chill mode in 'Haunted Kind' (which is a truly beautiful piece of music), then back up to strength in the fifth and onwards and upwards to the final piece, the original mix of 'Who are you?', which rounds the whole experience off tightly. Badfinger was a rock band formed in Swansea, Wales in the early 1960's who became one of the earliest representatives of the post-60s power pop genre. During the early 1970s the band was at times tagged as the heir apparent to The Beatles, partly because of their close working relationship with them and partly because of their similar sound. The band had four consecutive worldwide hit songs and contributed "Without You," a Number One Billboard hit for Harry Nilsson which was covered by hundreds of artists. Badfinger's two principally-known singers and songwriters, Pete Ham and Tom Evans committed suicide in 1975 and 1983. Download.

Sarah Records was a UK independent record label active between 1987 and 1995,[1] best known for its recordings of twee pop, though the label always hated this tag, not just because some of the bands could scarcely be described as "twee", but also because it preferred to emphasise the politics of the label (attacking the capitalism and sexism of the record industry, both explicitly in text and more subtly and symbolically through the packaging and marketing of the records themselves).

La Varieté was the 1982 debut album by Weekend, formed by Alison Statton (of much-loved Welsh avant-garde/indie pioneers the Young Marble Giants) alongside guitarists Simon Booth and Spike.
A beautifully realised and delicate collection of songs set against a jazz backdrop, it switches across myriad musical settings including samba, cabaret, Afrobeat and highly personal, confessional pop.
The album was originally released in 1982 on the Rough Trade label and made it to No 4 in the Independent charts staying in there for 15 weeks. It was revered by critics on release as a bold new departure from the prevailing post-punk ethos and served as a major influence on Saint Etienne, the Sundays, Belle And Sebastian and many others. Freak Out! is the debut album by American experimental rock band The Mothers of Invention, released June 27, 1966 on Verve Records. Though often cited as one of rock music's first concept albums, the real unifying theme of the album is not musical, but a satirical attitude based on frontman Frank Zappa's unique perception of American pop culture. It was also one of the earliest double albums in rock music, and the first 2-record debut. Download.

Born "Gilberto Miguel Calderón" in New York City, Cuba's parents moved from Puerto Rico to New York City in the late 1920s and settled in Spanish Harlem, a Latino community located in Manhattan. Joe Cuba was raised in an apartment building where his father had become the owner of a candy store located on the ground floor (street level floor). His father had organized a stickball club called the Devils. Stickball was the main sport activity of the neighborhood. After Cuba broke a leg he took up playing the conga and continued to practice with the conga between school and his free time. Eventually he graduated from high school and joined a band. Download.

French composer Michel Legrand won the 1971 Academy Award for best score for his work on the film Summer of '42, and his "Theme from Summer of 42" not only became a Top 40 instrumental hit in a recording by Peter Nero, but was also transformed, with lyrics added by Alan and Marilyn Bergman, into a song, "The Summer Knows," that attracted recordings by Tony Bennett, Johnny Mathis, Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Andy Williams, and others. Warner Bros. Records released this Summer of '42 soundtrack album, and it peaked at number 52 during 32 weeks on the Billboard chart. Download.

I can still remember the effect this album had on me when I first heard it way back in 1981. I would listen to it on headphones and marvel at every note of every layer. I had simply never heard anything like it before, and to be honest, it blew me away. In the early eighties, people were really beginning to tire of thrashing guitars that lacked melody and all that hopeless American rock that filled up the European charts. Dare was the first successful mix of electronics with pure, commercial pop. Taking it a step further than the godfathers of electronica Kraftwerk, the League brought in sequencers and mixed it with their love for cult films and fashion. The album contains synth baseline which are still being imitated by dance acts today some 20 years after this classic album was released. Dare paved the way for groups such as Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, Heaven 17, & New Order. It was a period when music was reinvented and enhanced. Download.
